TDSBot for ice machines

Ice Machine Scale Monitoring & Warranty Documentation

TDSBot installs inline on the supply line to each ice machine and measures hardness and TDS every minute — a continuous, timestamped record of the exact water reaching the evaporator plate.

For Facility & Foodservice
Scale doesn't announce itself. It just makes less ice.

By the time you notice production has dropped, scale has been building on the evaporator plate for weeks. TDSBot monitors hardness and TDS continuously and alerts you before scale forms — not after your Saturday-night ice bin runs empty.

Patient-care ice has no room for guesswork.

Hospitals, senior living and school nutrition programs run ice machines under health-code scrutiny most restaurants never see. TDSBot gives you a continuous, timestamped water quality record — evidence of managed water treatment, not just a cleaning-calendar checkbox.

40 machines. One dashboard, not 40 site visits.

Convenience stores, gas stations and gyms run ice machines unattended for weeks at a time. TDSBot's fleet dashboard shows every site's hardness and TDS status in one view — so your service team visits the 3 machines that need attention, not all 40 on a fixed schedule.

The chemistry

Freezing concentrates everything water leaves behind.

An ice machine freezes water in thin layers on a metal evaporator plate. As pure water crystallizes out, dissolved calcium and magnesium concentrate in the remaining liquid — repeated cycle after cycle. This is why ice machines scale faster than a simple flow-through appliance running the same water. Scale is a thermal insulator: it slows heat transfer, lengthens freeze cycles, and cuts daily ice production well before the machine actually stops working.

General industry guidance targets water hardness of 1–5 grains per gallon (about 17–85 ppm as CaCO₃) and TDS of 70–200 ppm for reliable scale-free operation. Harder water doesn't just risk failure sooner — it shortens the interval between cleanings your manufacturer already recommends.

Warranty documentation

Your manufacturer probably requires
proof of water treatment.

Most commercial ice machine manufacturers make documented water treatment a condition of warranty coverage. When a scale-related failure claim comes in without that documentation, it's a much harder conversation — sometimes a denied one. TDSBot gives you a continuous, timestamped hardness and TDS log for the exact water reaching your machine, exportable whenever you need it.

This is supporting documentation, not a guarantee of approval. Warranty terms vary by manufacturer and model — check your specific documentation for exact requirements.

Continuous record
Every hour, time stamped

Hardness and TDS logged continuously from installation, not just at scheduled service visits. Raw sensor data, always exportable.

Filter tracking
Know when treatment fails

TDSBot detects when a pre-filter or softener starts passing hardness through, before scale has a chance to form on the evaporator.

Amenity ice machines that get noticed the moment they stop working, monitored the same way as the rest of your portfolio.

How TDSBot installs

Two configurations,
single machine or shared treatment.

One sensor measures the water actually reaching the evaporator. A second on the shared treatment outlet tells you whether a problem is site-wide or machine-specific.

Single machine
One TDSBot per ice machine

Installs inline on the water supply line feeding the machine, after any existing pre-filter and before the inlet valve — measuring the actual water quality reaching the evaporator, including filter degradation.

Shared treatment system
Dual-sensor treatment verification

For sites where one softener or RO system feeds multiple appliances, a second TDSBot on the treatment system's outlet distinguishes a treatment failure from a problem specific to one machine.

What a scale failure costs

Emergency service calls cost more than monitoring, every time.

Reported commercial ice machine repair costs vary widely by failure type — a valve or sensor repair typically runs $150–550, a compressor failure $800–2,500. Scale-driven failures compound: reduced capacity first, then component damage.

What operators say

From teams managing
ice machines at scale.

“We run ice machines across 40 sites and used to find out about a scale problem when a store manager called to say the machine stopped. Now we see hardness trending up two weeks before it would've failed. That's the difference between a scheduled filter swap and an emergency call.”
FDFacilities DirectorConvenience store chain, Southwest US
“Our ice machine warranty explicitly requires documented water treatment. Before TDSBot, that documentation was a service log with dates on it. Now it’s an actual continuous record of hardness and TDS. When we had a claim, having real data instead of a maintenance log made the conversation completely different.”

Questions from operators

Ice machine monitoring
— common questions

Ice machines freeze water in thin layers on a metal evaporator plate, and freezing concentrates dissolved minerals — calcium and magnesium are left behind in the remaining liquid as pure water crystallizes out. This repeated concentration cycle deposits calcium carbonate scale on the plate far faster than in a simple flow-through appliance. General industry guidance targets water hardness of 1–5 grains per gallon (about 17–85 ppm as CaCO₃) and TDS of 70–200 ppm for reliable scale-free operation; harder water accelerates scale formation and shortens the interval between cleanings.

Scale is a thermal insulator. A thin scale layer on the evaporator plate slows heat transfer, which means the machine takes longer to freeze each batch — cycle times lengthen, and daily ice production drops. Left long enough, scale narrows water distribution tubes and spray holes, causing uneven ice formation, thin or hollow cubes, and eventually a full stop in production. This is consistently reported as the single most common ice machine failure mode across major brands.

Most commercial ice machine manufacturers require documented water treatment as a condition of warranty coverage — a scale-related failure claim can be denied without proof that water quality was being managed. TDSBot provides a continuous, timestamped hardness and TDS log for the exact water reaching your machine, exportable at any time. This is supporting documentation for a warranty claim, not a guarantee of approval — check your specific manufacturer's warranty terms for exact requirements.

TDSBot installs inline on the water supply line feeding the ice machine, typically after any existing pre-filter and before the machine's inlet valve. This measures the actual water quality reaching the evaporator, including any filter degradation. For sites with a shared water treatment system feeding multiple appliances, a second TDSBot on the treatment system's outlet can distinguish a treatment failure from an ice-machine-specific problem. Installation uses quick-connect fittings and takes about 15 minutes.

This depends on your machine and manufacturer guidance, but a common starting point is a hardness alert at 5 grains per gallon (85 ppm as CaCO₃) and a TDS alert at 200 ppm — the upper end of commonly cited operating targets. Healthcare and other scale-sensitive settings often set tighter thresholds. TDSBot lets you configure your own threshold at onboarding and adjust it at any time from the dashboard.

Yes. The fleet dashboard, included from the Monitor plan, shows every monitored ice machine across every site in one view, sorted by hardness/TDS status and days until threshold. This is built for multi-site operators — convenience store chains, healthcare systems, school districts — who need to know which of dozens or hundreds of unattended machines needs attention this week, not a site-by-site manual check.
